Wild Things
Wild Things
Artist’s Statement
The relationship between humanity and the natural fauna of our inhabited space is at best, tumultuous. At worst, it does not exist. For some, the song of a wild creature is sung directly into their consciousness and for others, the song is ignorable noise.
Artist A.L. Lummus’s connection to the wild world isn’t exactly strong, as evidenced in every other group of the artist’s works. However, Lummus’s desire to better comprehend animalia can be seen in the series Wild Things.
Wild Things is the artist’s personal challenge to find the rhythm between human and animal.
Anthrozoologist John Bradshaw contends with his research that there are genetic markers giving humans the predisposition to connect more deeply with four legged friends.
While the art may be an attempt at beastial propinquity for someone without this genetic marker, the viewer can see the bold marker brush stroke, the vivid pallet, and the repeating motif as a visual grasp of natural and wild pattern. Each piece depicts a species native to foothills and mountain regions of Colorado, the artist’s current home.
Humans connect with a species for the qualities they see prevalent in their own character. Through these works, it is the artist’s hope that the viewer is challenged to find not only a similarity, but a bond.
